The project

The Serra de Tramuntana is more than just a mountain range: it’s a mosaic of stone, water, crops and towns that, for centuries, have shaped a cultural landscape recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. With the aim of promoting and protecting this legacy, Mallorca Island Council has created a network of interpretation centres, all of which are tied to the Serra Tramuntana Centre at Raixa Estate.

The building, which opened in 2021, combines recovered ethnological artefacts with a contemporary museum design. Visitors can explore nine rooms and learn about the many treasures of the Serra that make it a World Heritage Site: its natural water network, traditional architecture, country estates, dry-stone structures, biodiversity and ways of living that still thrive across its 20 municipalities.

The project has seen the renovation of the interpretation centre at Raixa, and has linked it to other information centres in the area to form an educational network, bringing the public closer to the Serra’s rich culture and nature. The goal is two-fold: to raise awareness about the importance of protecting this environment, and to offer tools to understand it in the context of its history and inhabitants.

Raixa Estate, where the centre is located, is home to historically important architectural and landscape elements, including beautiful gardens, a large fish pond, and a monumental staircase. It’s therefore the perfect setting in which to learn about how humans here have interacted with their surroundings to shape the Serra’s identity. This project thus strengthens the preservation and understanding of these values, ensuring their place in our collective memory.
