The project

The protected natural areas in the Natura 2000 Network are a key pillar for conservation in Europe. In the Balearic Islands, they cover almost a quarter of the land area, although a large part of the population is unaware of their exact location or the importance they have for the island’s biodiversity and landscape.

To improve their visibility and accessibility, the Balearic Government has led a signposting plan under the Regional Ministry of the Environment. The goal: to provide these areas with a unified and easily recognisable system that allows visitors to find their way around and better understand the protected natural resources.

The new signage, designed to blend in with the surroundings, identifies access paths and facilities, marks trails and points of interest, and provides information on the rules of use set out in management plans. This signage will enhance the experience of those who visit these sites, and reinforce the image of an interconnected network of natural spaces managed under a common framework.

This action, which covers Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, is a key tool for bringing the Natura 2000 Network closer to both residents and tourists. The aim is to ensure that visits to these sites are orderly, safe and respectful, encouraging a responsible attitude that helps to protect the archipelago’s natural heritage.
