An Environmental Programme That Favours Social Inclusion in Mallorca

Human-powered teams care for habitats in natural parks through social engagement

What does it consist of?

Mallorca has benefited from a programme focused on ecological conservation and social integration. Teams of people in vulnerable situations worked in natural parks and on public estates, carrying out maintenance tasks and improving the environment without the use of machinery. An action that focuses on both ecology and decent work.

The project

In 2017, some of the public funding earmarked for protecting natural areas in the Balearic Islands was put towards a unique programme in Mallorca: integrating people at risk of social exclusion into environmental conservation work. This initiative, promoted by the Balearic Environmental Council, was carried out through human-powered teams adapted to the skills of the participants.

The programme was structured in eight blocks of action. These included work on the dune systems in s'Albufera Park and s'Albufereta Park, the protection of the Mondragó coastline, reforestation with native species in Llevant, and the removal of waste in Es Trenc-Salobrar de Campos. Work was also carried out on public estates in the Tramuntana Mountains, as well as specific actions in natural parks in Ibiza and Cabrera.

The focus of the project was twofold: to improve the ecological conditions of protected areas and to actively include vulnerable people in the labour market. This work didn’t replace the Balearic Nature Institute’s (IBANAT) technical tasks, rather it complemented its scope with manual, sustainable ongoing action.

This action received €254,535 of the approved budget, and had a clear social and environmental impact. The initiative strengthened the conservation of vulnerable habitats while providing a pathway to integration for those most in need. It’s a practical example of how public policy can target both land conservation and social justice.
