Electrification of the fleet of local council vehicles of the Mallorca public water network - Pollença

Energy transition for more sustainable management

What does it consist of?

The objective of this project focuses on reducing contaminating emissions, such as the gases from the combustion of fossil fuels due to the carbon footprint and the greenhouse effect they cause, and noise pollution generated by vehicle engines. In addition, it also aims to reduce fuel costs, which in some cases means the total elimination of this expense if energy comes from solar panels.

The project

The town councils that form the Mallorca public water network (Aguas Públicas de Mallorca - APM) (Campanet, Inca, Manacor, Palma, Pollença, Sa Pobla and Valldemossa) manage the water cycle of their towns both directly and through municipal companies. As the managers of these services, their vehicles are highly present in the towns and have a significant impact on climate change, air quality and noise pollution because of the fossil fuels used in their conventional engines.

Some of these town councils have already implemented (or are in the process of doing so) Sustainable Energy Action Plans (Planes de Acción de Energía Sostenible - PAES) to meet the objectives of the fight against climate change, or other plans that focus on improving air quality and reducing noise pollution The advantages of switching to a fleet of electric vehicles are vital for reaching these goals.

Through this project, the Mallorca public water network is aiming to become a model of energy transition towards renewable sources and environmentally efficient alternative technologies, in accordance with European strategy and the generational change in transportation technology.

In terms of action, investment will be made in a total of 47 light vehicles (mainly cars and vans) by the seven participating town councils, and in the establishing of a recharging point (PdR) for each electric vehicle in the fleet with the aim of facilitating the implementation of electromobility in all of the town councils.

The main part of this new electric fleet will replace obsolete vehicles that are powered by conventional fossil fuels, diesel and petrol, and are between fifteen and twenty years old on average, which makes them mechanically very deteriorated with high levels of polluting emissions.

In this sense, for the town council of Pollença, the project sets aside part of the investment which will be used for establishing electric vehicle recharging points and the incorporation of a total of four electric vehicles (three vans and one car).
