Electrification of the fleet of local council vehicles of the Mallorca public water network, Valldemossa

Energy transition for a more sustainable management

What does it consist of?

The aim of this project is to contaminating emissions such as the gases from the combustion of fossil fuels due to the carbon footprint and the greenhouse effect they cause, and noise pollution generated by vehicle engines. In addition, it also aims to reduce fuel costs, which in some cases means the total elimination of this expense if energy comes from solar panels.

The project

The local councils that form part of the Mallorca public water network (Aguas Públicas de Mallorca - APM) (Campanet, Inca, Manacor, Palma, Pollença, Sa Pobla and Valldemossa) manage the water cycle of their municipalities, both directly and through municipal companies. As managers of these services, their vehicles have an important presence in the urban environment, with a major impact in terms of climate change, air quality and noise, due to the use of fossil fuels in conventional vehicle engines.

Some of these local councils already have (or are planning to implement) sustainable energy actions plans (Planes de Acción de Energía Sostenible - PAES) to meet targets aimed at combating climate change, or others plans to improve air quality or reduce noise pollution. The advantages of converting the motor pool to electric vehicles form an essential part of meeting these targets.

With this project the Mallorca public water network hopes to become a model of energy transition towards renewable sources and environmentally efficient alternative technologies, in line with European strategies and with the generational change of mobility technologies.

The specific actions to be taken involve investing in 47 motor pool vehicles among the seven participating local authorities, consisting mainly of cars and vans, with an electric charge point available for each vehicle, helping to implement electromobility throughout all seven councils.

Most of this new motor pool will replace obsolete vehicles with conventional engines that use fossil fuels (petrol or diesel) and which are 15 to 20 years old, meaning they have deteriorated mechanics and high emission levels of pollutants.

Accordingly, this project ensures that part of the investment is reserved for the Valldemossa local authority to install an electric charge point for vehicles and to incorporate one electric vehicle into its motor pool.
