Flood Protection in the Heart of Bunyola

Reinforcement of banks and environmental restoration along the urban section of the stream

What does it consist of?

The project promotes the stabilisation and maintenance of the Bunyola Stream’s bed as it passes through the town centre, a key preventive action against flooding caused by torrential rains in the Tramuntana Mountains.

The project

The Bunyola Stream, like so many others in the Balearic Islands, remains dry for most of the year, but its function is vital during heavy rainfall, especially in steep areas such as those surrounding the Tramuntana Mountains. These streams then become channels for discharging the water and dragging sediment, stones or vegetation, creating significant risks when they cross through urbanised areas.

In this context, a plan developed in the municipality of Bunyola seeks to ensure safety and protection against potential flooding by adapting the riverbed along its urban section. The action focuses on stabilising the banks, which are particularly damaged, to prevent landslides that could obstruct the flow of water.

The stream, which runs through the town centre, poses a real threat during heavy rainfall events. The retaining walls, up to 6.5 metres high, are in a poor state and are at risk of collapsing due to the erosive action of water. The action includes the restoration of these walls with construction solutions adapted to the characteristics of each section. It also involves measures to adapt the riverbed to its environment in order to give the stream more natural stability in the event of future floods.

Through this action, the Balearic Government is reinforcing its strategy of holistic water risk management and adaptation to climate change in particularly vulnerable areas, such as those bordering the Tramuntana Mountains. This work not only prevents flooding, protects infrastructure and safeguards housing, but also helps to create a more harmonious relationship between the city and its natural environment.
