Santa Eulària Desalination Plant Becomes Part of Ibiza’s Water System

The desalination plant can now distribute treated water thanks to its connection to the primary network

What does it consist of?

The Santa Eulària des Riu desalination plant is now fully connected to the mains water distribution network in Ibiza. The works address a long-standing blockage and make it possible to harness its productive capacity for the benefit of the whole island, after years of delayed entry into service due to lack of connection to mains water.

The project

The Santa Eulària des Riu desalination plant was originally designed to be a key part of Ibiza’s water system. However, until recently it could not be fully integrated into the supply network because it wasn’t physically connected to the island’s mains network. Although technically operational, this situation limited its actual use.

The plan executed has resolved this issue with infrastructure designed to transport water from the plant’s tanks to municipal delivery points. The works mainly revolved around the construction of a new pumping station located next to the existing tank, which allows water to be pumped until it entering the general network.

A technical building has also been constructed in Sa Llavanera, together with a valve chamber that acts as a connection hub between the main arteries of the network. The works are complete with a 1,140-metre drainage collector for the system’s overflow, which will also serve the new 5,000 m³ tank planned for the Santa Eulària municipal network.

Other practical elements have also been included such as a drinking water dispenser for home delivery trucks, as well as an additional pipeline to drain off the desalination plant’s tanks. Through these works, Ibiza strengthens its water supply network and moves towards greater efficiency in the use of its desalinated water resources.
