The project to implement remote meter reading in the municipality of Felanitx aims to improve water management and reduce losses in the distribution network. This initiative will enable intelligent management of consumption and to comply with the objectives of the Balearic Islands Hydrological Plan (Plan Hidrológico de las Islas Baleares, PHIB), which sets the maximum loss rate at 17%.

The municipality of Felanitx still has serious problems in the management of drinking water. In 2021, losses in the network exceed 40%, an unsustainable figure on an island with limited water resources. This problem is due to several factors: the distribution network is very old, the meters are obsolete and the urban reservoirs are structurally deficient.
This situation has resulted in unacceptable waste for the community and an urgent need for intervention. Thus, the project to implement a remote meter reading system is an efficient solution to modernise the network, improve service management and reduce losses.
The project foresees the replacement of the existing water meters with new ones equipped with remote reading technology using radio frequency. This technology will enable hourly consumption readings to be taken without the need to physically access the meters, facilitating remote control and management.
The project will include the installation of new meters at all supply points in the town, many of which were unmetered or obsolete. These devices will provide an ongoing transmission of information through a communication network that will be installed at strategic points in the municipality.
Citizen participation
The information collected will be managed through a digital platform that will enable the manager and users to access the data in real time through a web portal. This will facilitate more accurate billing and allow for immediate detection of leaks or anomalous consumption. This will increase transparency and citizen participation in water management, while promoting a more responsible use of resources.
Aside from the installation of new meters, the project also foresees the installation of chlorine meters at strategic points to guarantee the quality of the water supplied, as well as a remote control system to optimise the water pumping processes from the wells to the reservoirs.
This initiative is expected to significantly reduce water losses, increase transparency and citizen participation in water management and improve the sustainability of the system.
Project aimed at improving the distribution and quality of drinking water in the town of Sant Miquel in Ibiza, and in its main tourist area.
