Modernisation and adaptation of Mallorca's water infrastructure

Renovation of water networks in 18 municipalities in Mallorca to optimise water management and guarantee a sustainable supply.

What does it consist of?

This project will renovate and modernise the water installations of 18 municipalities in Mallorca. The aim is to improve efficiency in the management of water, a scarce resource on the island. Actions range from the renovation of drinking water distribution networks to the construction of new reservoirs and rainwater collection networks, which will optimise available resources, reduce losses and guarantee an adequate and sustainable supply for the population.

The project

Water is a limited resource in Mallorca, especially in a context of increasingly long and frequent droughts. This situation makes efficient water management a priority for local administrations. Despite efforts by municipalities to improve their water infrastructures, they are still far from reaching optimal levels of efficiency.

Drinking water distribution networks are currently leaking significantly, resulting in a waste of the island's scarce resources. In addition, water treatment infrastructures are often not sufficient to ensure water quality and reuse. This is why it is essential to invest in these facilities: to ensure a continuous supply of quality water, reduce losses and optimise the use of available water resources.

The project to improve Mallorca's water infrastructure includes a series of actions aimed at optimising water management in 18 municipalities on the island. The main actions include:

  • Construction and improvement of drinking water regulating reservoirs to guarantee a constant supply of drinking water in good conditions.

  • Renovation of drinking water distribution networks and pipes to reduce leakage.

  • Creation of new rainwater collection networks to improve rainwater management and prevent flooding.

  • Construction of new drinking water treatment plants (DWTP) and irrigation networks using treated water.

  • Implementation of digital remote water meter reading systems with intelligent management technologies to optimise consumption.

  • Connection to natural water sources that are currently wasted to improve the use of local water resources.

  • Specific actions will also be carried out to detect and reduce leaks in the distribution networks and optimise the water catchment flow.

All these measures aim to ensure a more efficient use of this resource and contribute to the environmental and energy sustainability of the island.

This project will also help to ensure a more constant and reliable supply of drinking water for the population, especially in a context of climate change. In the long term, the actions will help Mallorca to become a more resilient and sustainable island in the management of its water resources.
