The aim of the project is to improve the public transport network in the east of Mallorca and to promote sustainable mobility on a route historically demanded by the population, with the possibility of extending it to Cala Ratjada in the future.

According to Europe-wide studies, the environmental impact of transport systems in 2018 generated external costs of 530 billion euros. These external costs are the costs of the greenhouse effect, air pollution, energy consumption, accidents and congestion on urban roads, among others. They are not borne by the market through prices, but must be covered by the taxpayer.
On the other hand, in Mallorca, the train prevents congestion on the main access roads to the towns, which would not be able to withstand current traffic volumes, and therefore offers a quality and sustainable tourism product. In fact, studies by the International Union of Railways show that each full commuter train results in a reduction in congestion equivalent to 1.5 km.
This project will complete the work begun in 2009 on the railway line between Manacor and Artà to provide a long-awaited sustainable modern railway infrastructure in eastern Mallorca. Another of the aims is to connect the region’s coastal and tourist area - which includes areas of great importance, such as Sa Coma, Cala Millor or Cala Ratjada by public transport.
This initiative will promote the use of the train as a collective and sustainable alternative means of transport between Manacor and Artà, offering residents of the eastern area an alternative to private vehicles. This will reduce pollution, noise and waste, avoid congestion on certain roads and increase the safety of pedestrians on the roads.
