Refuge for hikers in the Ses Porqueres de Galatzó building

The project

As part of its many projects, the Council of Mallorca promotes various hiking trails. One of which is the Ruta de Piedra Seco (Dry Stone Route). This trail has a set of conveniently marked pathways, which have been reformed by following the dry stone technique, and a network of mountain refuges have been created by renovating emblematic buildings strategically located along the trail.

On the Galatzó Estate, acquired in 2006 by Calvià town council, lies Ses Porqueres, a building originally constructed as an animal shelter and which is currently in a ruinous state. Through the implementation of this project, the aim is to restore and refurbish this building so as to convert it into a mountain refuge and that can be added to the Piedra Seco Refuge Network of the Reginal Parliament of Mallorca.

In order to transform the Ses Porqueres building on the Galatzó Estate into a mountain refuge, the technical department of Calvià town council has drawn up the corresponding project outlining the required renovation and restoration work, which includes the following actions: demolition and preparation works, iron works and roofing, masonry and partitioning walls, sanitation, paving and road surfaces, labouring works, rendering, plastering and painting, coating and tiling, among others.

The adaptation of the old Ses Porqueres building will offer a refuge with 52 beds in 12 rooms, and different areas such as housing for the guards, a kitchen, dining rooms for the users and a multifunctional room for holding educational and cultural activities.
