The project

The project consists of running a pilot programme to test the feasibility of using the biomass derived from the exploitation and cleaning of public and private estates, with the aim of using it in the biomass boilers of public facilities located in the municipalities of the Serra de Tramuntana.

The particular orography of the Serra makes access to forest estates rather complicated and, therefore, it is essential to study its specific characteristics and its viability through a pilot program on the ground. The aim of the project is to contribute decisively to the recovery of the rural environment, as well as to the protection of the natural area of the Serra de Tramuntana, one of the main objectives of the Annual Sustainable Tourism Drive Plan of 2017.

Specifically, the municipalities of the Mancomunidad (commonwealth of municipalities) occupy a total area of 66,538.1 hectares, of which almost 80% is forest land. This is also an initiative that will boost the economic activity associated with the rural environment and will allow the verification of the viability of an economic activity that can hopefully be replicated.

For this reason, the project is also demonstrative, since if it is successful, it can be used as a model to be replicated in all the towns of the Mancomunidad since it will identify and design a viable line of action to achieve an exemplary forestry management plan that, in addition to preventing fires and maintaining the landscape, will mean implementing a sustainable energy model that will help the fight against climate change.

All of this, without forgetting that it will lead to a possible economic benefit for the private owners who contribute to the maintenance of the landscape and will generally drive local economic activity.
