Urban Renewal and Water Network Improvements in Moscari

The project plans to replace outdated pipes and bury infrastructure on Sor Maria dels Dolors street

What does it consist of?

Moscari is undergoing urban works focused on a major ongoing problem: drinking water leakages in a section of Sor Maria dels Dolors street. The project also includes the undergrounding of electrical, street lighting and telecommunications networks, with the aim of improving both water efficiency and the scenic appeal of the centre.

The project

The works form part of an approach that is increasingly common in countryside municipalities in the Balearic Islands: using urban renewal projects to address structural deficiencies related to water management, accessibility, and the urban landscape. In this case, the work focuses on a section of Sor Maria dels Dolors street in Moscari, where the existing network has problems due to its age and inefficient set-up.

The project will see the existing drinking water network replaced, which runs under the road and operates with a double pipe that has deteriorated. The new, more reliable polyethylene pipes will be installed on both sides of the road beneath the gutter, in order to avoid unnecessary crossings over the carriageway and reduce the risk of breakdowns. Water connections will also be renewed and drainage will be improved, with the aim of steadily reducing water losses.

As well as this upgrade, infrastructures that are still overhead will be buried underground. Street light cables, the low-voltage network and telecommunication lines will be moved underground, a decision that responds to both functional and scenic needs. The work will make it possible to remove visible cables and poles, as well as to better organise a place where these features have a strong visual impact on the town’s landscape.

Pavement surfaces will also be replaced on the most damaged parts. The project’s official report sets the estimated execution period at five months, although it will depend on the final contracting and the pace of the work. At the time of writing, the tender was still pending completion of an administrative procedure by the company awarded the contract before the process could be closed.
