The main objective of this tourism model on Menorca, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1993, is to achieve sustainable, viable, fair, inclusive, egalitarian and quality tourism development that maintains a balance between tourism’s social, economic and environmental dimensions.
This requires adapting infrastructures and steering the tourism sector towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly model. It also requires creating a tourism product based on ecotourism, observing the sky, native wildlife and plants, and promoting sustainable activities along Camí de Cavalls path, the coast and in the marine environment.
The ecotourism project in Menorca aims to achieve objectives such as:
- Fostering sustainable internal tourism mobility to lessen the carbon footprint of the tourists that visit us.
- Promoting suitable environmental management of the tourism sector (accommodation and supplementary offers): environmental management system, good environmental practices and training.
- Establishing environmental policies and practices at the destination.
- Giving tourists recommendations on good environmental practices.
- Extending the tourism season, thus lessening the current high seasonality to prevent saturation situations of services, public spaces and infrastructures that can inconvenience residents.
- Decreasing the seasonality of jobs in tourism to ensure more employment stability.
- Boosting the training of professionals in the tourism sector and improving the training of current workers.
- Consolidating a portfolio of attractive tourism products specifically for the island.
- Promoting the local economy.
- Improving the competitiveness of the tourism sector.
- Expanding the range of tourism services so that they include quality, diversity and brands.
- Promoting employment and entrepreneurship.
- Establishing a transport system that ensures accessibility and mobility match demand.
- Boosting the economy; new market niches.
