Maintaining and improving the urban wastewater network is a priority in terms of both public health and quality of life. Facilities that have exceeded their useful life often develop faults, something that goes against the concept of environmental sustainability. With this project, and with the works to complete the offshore sewage pipeline, Ciutadella is successfully modernising its infrastructures.

The general wastewater treatment system in Ciutadella Sud services not just the central area of Ciutadella, but also the developments to the south of the town (Cap d’Artrutx, Son Blanc, Cala Blanca, Sa Caleta and Santandria).
This system consists of the wastewater treatment plant, the wastewater pumping station and pipeline, and the effluent disposal system via an offshore pipeline.
Since 1991, the Balearic Islands Agency for Water and Environmental Quality (ABAQUA) took over the management of the Ciutadella Sud facilities, which for 25 years have had no improvement works except for occasional repair and replacement work on particular pieces of equipment or pipelines.
This project is for partially renovating the wastewater pipe between the treatment plant and the pumping station, specifically in the fibre cement section, in order to guarantee the pipeline as a whole can operate in optimal conditions.
