The action sought to restore a run-down property at the entrance to the municipality.

What does it consist of?

Sant Lluís Town Council has bought the unfinished Sa Tanca building, located at the entrance to the municipality from Maó. The purchase will make it possible to restore a rundown space and open up new opportunities for civic, educational and cultural use, improving the town’s image and boosting off-season activity.

The project

The unfinished structure of the Sa Tanca building, which can be seen from the ‘Me-8’ road as you reach Sant Lluís, had been unused for more than a decade and showed obvious signs of damage. Originally a shopping and leisure centre, the building was shut down due to its promoters’ financial problems and passed into the hands of a bank.

Through this action, the City Council has purchased the building in order to prevent further deterioration and restore its potential. The action is considered strategic because of its location, right at the main entrance to the town centre, a clearly visible area that showed an image of neglect until now. Following the purchase, there are plans to assess its structural condition and implement initial safety measures.

The purpose of the property will be redefined as a public service. It is set to be used as a civic social facility, with classrooms, a cultural space and convention centre, adapting progressively to the needs of the municipality. The underground levels will be used as a new public car park to take pressure off the city centre.

The purchase took place between 2018 and 2019, with an overall investment of €1.65 million funded by sustainable tourism tax. The plan posed an opportunity to rethink the entrance to Sant Lluís and breathe new life into a space that, for years, had symbolised a failed project.
