The project

Menorca Island Council has made progress in incorporating smart technology, in a bid to move towards more efficient management on the island. Under the name ‘Menorca Territori VIU’, the plan is intended to be a transversal tool to collect, analyse and apply data on key resources, seeking to improve public services, protect the natural environment and promote less seasonal tourism.

The proposal includes placing sensors at strategic points, alongside the development of a digital analysis and management platform. This infrastructure aims to facilitate decision-making based on real-time data, especially in areas such as water and energy use, conservation of rural areas and waste control. Through agreements with local councils, research centres and technology companies, the plan has a collaborative, open approach.

One of the most significant areas is the promotion of sustainable tourism, especially outside the high season. This technology will serve to design campaigns, pathways and services that are better adapted to the real capacity of the area, thereby improving the visitor experience and reducing environmental impact. Interactive portals are also planned to provide access to this information for citizens and local operators.

The total investment allocated amounts to €1,351,152, granted under the 2017 sustainable tourism tax funding scheme. Beyond new devices and platforms, the aim is to establish a long-term digital strategy that positions Menorca as a leading smart, resilient island in the Mediterranean.
