Science and Sea: Reflecting on a Sustainable Relationship with the Mediterranean

Environment

A conversation with Àngels Fernández on coasts, awareness and the future of the marine environment

The sea is one of the greatest natural assets of the Balearic Islands, but it’s also one of the most vulnerable ecosystems. Understanding how it works is key to protecting it and making responsible decisions about how it’s used. In this connection, marine science becomes a fundamental tool for advancing towards a more balanced and sustainable relationship with the marine environment.

In the Converses series, Aina Segura talks to people who offer their insights and experience to reflect on sustainability from different fields. Through casual, intimate conversations, the series underlines the importance of listening to those who research, work and observe the land in order to better understand the environmental challenges facing the Balearic Islands, from a meticulous yet accessible point of view.

In this episode, Aina Segura talks to Àngels Fernández, a researcher specialising in coastal dynamics and marine studies, who has worked extensively on international projects and at the SOCIB research foundation. Fernández shares how the analysis of beaches, marine currents and ecosystems such as seagrass meadows helps us to better understand the fragility of the Balearic coastline. Throughout the conversation, she reflects on how science can help us rethink our relationship with the sea and move towards a truly sustainable model, combining scientific knowledge with a deeply human approach to the future of marine ecosystems.
