Connection to the sewage network for Es Ca Marí

Sewerage renovation in Es Ca Marí to improve water treatment and agricultural use of water

What does it consist of?

An action in Formentera plans to put an end to the septic tanks in the tourist resort of Es Ca Marí by connecting it to the general sewage network. The aim is to ensure adequate treatment of wastewater to enable it to be reused in local irrigation and to reduce the environmental impact on the marine environment.

The project

The urban centre of Es Ca Marí, in the south of Formentera, currently has dozens of homes and tourist establishments without connection to the sewage network. Wastewater is managed using individual systems that lead to low quality discharges. The solution, proposed by the Island Council, involves a direct connection to the island's wastewater treatment plant.

Designed in three phases, the project includes the installation of collectors, pumping stations and pipelines to ensure the transfer of water to the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Once treated, this water can be reused for agricultural irrigation, thus closing the island's water cycle and reducing dependence on the desalination plant.

In addition to the environmental benefits, the project will eliminate the existing septic tanks and reduce seepage into the subsoil. The use of sustainable materials, the design adapted to the relief of the terrain and the replacement of the affected pavement are part of the implementation plan, which is expected to be carried out in winter to minimise inconvenience.

With a direct impact on over 2,000 people and a budget of over one million euros, this intervention not only meets a historical demand of the neighbourhood, but also seeks to harmonise tourism development, water sustainability and improvement of natural resources.
