Sant Antoni de Portmany Town Council is promoting an ambitious project to transform Carrer de Vara de Rey, between Passeig de Ponent and Carrer de Bartomeu Vicent Ramon. This work, part of the municipality's Urban Landscape Quality Plan, aims to rebuild this road as a major green space that promotes mobility on foot and urban cohesion.
The project foresees the creation of a tree-lined boulevard with accessible pavements, playgrounds, shaded areas and sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS). Conventional parking will be removed and traffic will be limited to emergency vehicles and restricted access. All of this aims to reduce the carbon footprint and improve thermal comfort in the area.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the transformation of Vara de Rey responds to a strategic objective: to reduce seasonality in tourism and diversify local economic activity. By creating an attractive space also in the off-season, it is expected to attract visitors to the town centre and to boost commerce and local life.
The execution timetable sets the start of works in October 2025, lasting approximately one year. The total budget amounts to €5.29 million, of which more than €4 million will be requested from public funds. This is a key action to redesign the centre of Sant Antoni as a healthier, safer and more attractive space.
