The protection of intangible cultural heritage is one of the tasks of the Island Council of Ibiza following the passing of regional law in 2019. Within this regulatory framework, the creation of the Centre de Patrimoni Immaterial de Ses Nou Rodades is promoted as a central space to promote and raise awareness of cultural traditions, such as the ball pagès dance and traditional pottery.
The new centre will be located at the Sant Rafel racecourse, a strategic location due to its accessibility and significance. The architectural project includes a building with interconnected arcades containing exhibition spaces, workshop areas, library, offices and meeting rooms. Moreover, a 200-seat tiered stage will be built and a residential area will be set up to accommodate visitors and participants in cultural exchanges.
One of the key elements of the project is its educational and community purpose. The centre will host training activities, exhibitions, conferences and meetings for local and international cultural organisations. As such, the aim is not just to conserve heritage, but also to revive it by promoting its use and reinterpretation by new generations.
The total budget amounts to €7,659,808, including all works, equipment and VAT. The investment will provide the island with an innovative space that boosts social cohesion and cultural attractiveness throughout the year. Through this facility, Ibiza takes a firm step towards the institutionalisation and visibility of its diverse intangible heritage.
