Improvements to the Portmany Bay Coastline for Pedestrians and Cyclists

A comprehensive development plan aims to improve coastal connectivity and infrastructure in Sant Antoni

What does it consist of?

The Portmany Bay coastal development project proposes a walkway for pedestrians and cyclists stretching along the entire coastline from Cala Gració to Port d’es Torrent, alongside improvements to infrastructure and the sewage network in one of Ibiza’s most densely built-up coastal areas. The initiative aims to promote public use of the coastline and improve basic services.

The project

Portmany Bay is a key coastal area in Sant Antoni de Portmany, visited by a high number of tourists and residents alike, which is putting pressure on its infrastructure and coastline. The project unfolding in this area stems from the need to redevelop the coastal strip for use by pedestrians and cyclists. It also seeks to improve basic infrastructure such as the sewage network, which are considered to lack efficiency and durability.

The plan focuses on the design of a continuous walkway, with a route that ensures both the passage of non-motorised transport and the quality of the urban natural landscape. As part of this initiative, plans include better signage, lighting along existing and future paths, and improved cycling infrastructure, with the aim of providing a safer and more accessible route for residents and visitors.

It also includes plans to restructure the sewage network in the southern part of the bay and reduce the visual impact of the structures that house the pumping stations, as well as to refurbish and extend the existing quays to facilitate maritime traffic between the two ends of the walkway. These elements are part of a broader vision of striking a balance between public use and environmental protection of the coastline.

With a total budget of over €20 million and co-funded by the Balearic Government, the Ibiza Council and the local councils of Sant Josep and Sant Antoni, the project is currently in the execution phase, with an environmental assessment and the final route design already underway. This development aims to transform the bay into a more integrated public space, where sustainable transport and infrastructure management take priority once again in the face of the pressures of urban growth.
