A new public grant scheme will support the installation of wind turbines of up to 20 kW, especially on old windpumps. The funding call, supported by the ITS fund, seeks to diversify renewable energy sources across the archipelago and to recover features of the rural landscape.

The project is part of the plan to promote sustainable tourism that was approved in 2024, and channels resources from the ITS fund towards financial support aimed at promoting electricity generation through micro wind turbines. This measure aims to complement the current dominance of photovoltaics and move towards a more diversified energy model.
The work is based on the launch of a public funding call, scheduled for the second half of 2025, open to individuals, public and private bodies. Funding will be used for two different purposes: firstly, for generators up to 20 kW and secondly, for electrical storage systems to back them up. A certain amount of funding will be set aside for windpumps, with the aim of recovering this heritage and giving it a new use.
Beyond their contribution to power, these turbines seek to provide a visual image of sustainability. It is thought that they can become educational and touristic landmarks, reinforcing the link between innovation, the landscape and rural heritage. Grants may cover up to 100% of the investment in certain cases, such as for heritage or publicly owned facilities.
The projects will be implemented between 2025 and 2027. Once the call has been published, beneficiaries will have twelve months to implement the facilities. With this initiative, the ITS fund not only promotes clean energy, but also defines a rational response to the climate, social and landscape-related challenges across the archipelago.
