The project

Protected areas of nature are areas of land and sea in the Balearic Islands declared as such in the manner provided by Act 5/2005 of 26 May for the conservation of spaces of environmental relevance (LECO), based on how representative they are, their uniqueness, fragility or the interest of their elements or natural systems.

Protected areas of nature in the Balearic Islands where there is farming activity include nature reserves such as s’Albufera de Mallorca, Mondragó and Ses Salines d’Eivissa i Formentera nature reserve; the natural area of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range and s’Albufereta nature reserve in Menorca.

Furthermore, on 8 October 1993, UNESCO declared Menorca a biosphere reserve, due to the high degree of compatibility achieved between economic activities, the consumption of resources and the conservation of a heritage and a landscape that has been and remains of an exceptional quality.

The aim of this line of aid is to foster recognition of the importance of farming activity within protected areas of nature, as they play an active role in maintaining and conserving these unique and fragile spaces. The aid will be used to cover subsidisable costs aimed at conserving the cultural and natural heritage that forms part of the farming facilities, such as: the costs of investing in material assets, the costs of implementing autochthonous livestock species, and major works such as improving and recovering the rural paths on farmland.
