Investments in agroforestry machinery and maintenance of natural areas

Renewal of machinery to strengthen fire prevention and environmental management in the Balearic Islands in the face of climate change.

What does it consist of?

This project will renew and update the machinery of the Balearic Institute of Nature (IBANAT), which has become obsolete, to meet fire prevention and natural area maintenance needs on the four islands. This investment will renew essential equipment to ensure safety and environmental protection in the face of increased extreme weather events due to climate change.

The project

IBANAT is the body responsible for the prevention and extinguishing of forest fires, management of protected natural areas and refuges in the Balearic Islands. Adequate and up-to-date equipment is essential to meet these objectives. This project plans to renew IBANAT's equipment over the next three years to cover the needs of several key areas:

Forestry, agricultural and multi-purpose machinery

Forestry treatment equipment will be renewed, both for conservation and fire prevention. This machinery will enable rapid and safe action to be taken in emergency situations arising from extreme weather phenomena.

Material transport equipment

Winter forestry work, as well as building and recreational area maintenance, requires large quantities of biomass, firewood and other materials to be move. For this reason, the brigades will be equipped with trucks suitable for driving with a B licence, equipped with small forestry cranes. The trailers, which have deteriorated due to continuous use, will also be renewed.

Public works machinery

IBANAT needs machinery to maintain roads and accesses to public properties and protected natural areas, as well as to build and maintain infrastructures for public use such as recreational areas and refuges. This machinery will also be used to deal with emergency situations, such as clearing roads or removing dangerous trees after storms.

Forest fire fighting vehicles

One of the fundamental pillars of IBANAT is fire prevention and extinguishing. To ensure an effective response in emergency situations, the fire fighting vehicles, which are essential for personnel safety and effective firefighting, will be renewed.

Support staff

The investment in machinery entails a considerable administrative burden as several public tenders will have to be managed in a short period of time. This will include the temporary recruitment of an industrial engineer and a lawyer to reinforce the Logistics and Maintenance Department for two and a half years.

This machinery renewal project is essential to ensure that IBANAT can continue with its role of protecting the environment and managing the natural areas of the Balearic Islands. The new equipment will improve its capacity to respond to climate change emergencies such as forest fires and storms. Additionally, brigades of workers will have safe and efficient machinery to carry out their daily tasks.

The investment will also contribute to keeping natural areas accessible and well managed, offering a better experience for visitors to recreational areas, natural parks and refuges. In the long term, renewing this equipment will strengthen IBANAT's capacity to act quickly and effectively to protect the territory, ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources.
