Recovery of the dunes in important environmental areas of the Balearic Islands

What does it consist of?

This project tries to maintain in an optimum state of conservation the dunes systems. It pretends to realize an initial diagnosis of the state of the different dunes systems; perform the necessary actions to be able to reorganize its uses; recover the species that form it, as well as inform the users of these areas.

The project

The dunes are highly fragile and vulnerable habitats, which are part of the Natura 2000 Network and considered as priorities, so it is an obligation to keep them as well-preserved as possible. They are, in addition, the main tourist attraction of the Balearic Islands. In 2016 they reached the highest number yet on the Human Pressure Index of 2,036,132 people, which was mainly in the summer months and affected dune areas such as the beach or the dunes themselves.

The work to prevent and slow down their deterioration will take place during both the summer and winter seasons, through actions that are carried out all year round. This project aims to slow down the deteriorating factors affecting the dune systems and indirectly their associated flora and fauna, recover the natural morphology and native vegetation so as to improve the habitat and eliminate invasive flora.

Therefore, the main objective of the project can be divided into two main areas: on the one hand, making an initial diagnosis of the state of the different dune systems that are part of the project to determine their current situation, the associated problems and the restoration and improvement actions that should be carried out for the conservation of the habitats and the species that are part of them.

On the other hand, taking the necessary actions to reorganise the uses of the dunes while reducing the impacts on the dune systems; recovering the species and habitats that are part of these systems and informing the users of these unique areas about the purpose of the actions and the good practices that must be followed to preserve the dunes of the Balearic Islands.
