Design and implementation of control strategies against Xylella fastidiosa

Raise awareness within the primary sector of the results and efficient control strategies to combat the Xylella Fastidiosa bacterium

What does it consist of?

The project focuses on the study of the bacterium Xandlella Fastidiosa on the Balearic Islands. The main purpose is to make the results and adequate control strategies to combat quarantine bacteria known to the primary sector.

The project

The Xylella fastidiosa bacterium is a quarantine plant pathogen in the EU which is of extreme significance to the countries of the Mediterranean basin. The bacteria can affect a wide variety of plant species, and in the Balearic Islands its presence has been found in key crops such as olive, grape, fig and almond trees. Furthermore, its presence in several species of the natural forest environments has been confirmed.

Therefore, studies and research have been suggested into the genetic variability of the bacteria, the diseases it can cause in both agricultural and wild plant species, the means of transmission and interactions with other plant and soil microorganisms, and the design and implementation of strategies on how to control it.

This research will focus on the study of the bacteria throughout the Balearic Islands, in order to transfer the knowledge generated and the appropriate control strategies to combat this quarantine bacterium to the primary sector.

The bacteria research project will offer economic benefits, since greater knowledge of the disease could improve control strategies and crop yields. It will also benefit the landscape and environment, mainly because it is a disease that affects the majority of tree species, both agricultural and wild (almond, olive, grape, and fig trees, etc.), present in the Balearic Islands.
