This initiative seeks to consolidate the Balearic Islands Health Research Institute (IdISBa) as a national and international benchmark in medical research. It is a key project to tackle the deficit of researchers in the archipelago and to make progress in attracting and consolidating research talent. GREAT-IdISBa addresses this need with a series of strategic initiatives to transform the research and innovation ecosystem in the archipelago.

Currently, the rate of researchers per thousand inhabitants in the Balearic Islands is much lower than the national average. This deficiency limits capacity for innovation and affects the competitiveness of local research. In addition, the absence of a Phase I Clinical Trials Unit hinders access to innovative treatments for the population and undermines the economic viability of IdISBa, which depends on income generated by these trials.
The GREAT-IdISBa project aims to address the lack of medical and health researchers with several programmes:
TECH Programme
It will call for four contracts for research support technicians with the aim of strengthening existing groups to improve the IdISBa's research infrastructure.
JUNIOR Programme
It will offer seven pre-doctoral contracts for the completion of theses in IdISBa research lines. This programme includes a mobility grant for three-month stays at prestigious research centres.
FOLIUM Programme
It will provide five 24-month postdoctoral contracts with the aim of incorporating researchers with international experience to consolidate IdISBa's lines of research.
THERAPÏA Programme
It will finance three scientific staff positions for the creation and consolidation of a Phase I Clinical Trials Unit. Contracts will be used to coordinate and execute innovative clinical trials, improving access to advanced treatments for the Balearic population.
GESTIÓ Programme
It will include the call for two contracts for administrative technicians who will support clinical trial project management and administration.
With these actions, IdISBa aims to attract and retain talent, improve management efficiency and establish itself as a centre of excellence in health research. The GREAT-IdISBa project is therefore a unique opportunity to transform the research landscape in the Balearic Islands, to contribute to an economic model based on innovation and knowledge, and to improve access to innovative health treatments for the Balearic population.
Promoting scientific and technological research to diversify the Balearic economy and improve social and environmental welfare.
