Together with teaching and knowledge transfer, research is one of the essential missions of universities. As the only public university in the archipelago, the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), embraces this mission at the same time taking on the responsibility for leading all strands of research activity.
The project seeks to promote the generation of scientific knowledge and quality research at the archipelago’s public university, with a specific focus on the social, cultural and geographical context of the islands. It will be structured around three areas:
Human resources for research. The main objective is to attract and retain research talent to promote research projects in strategic areas, in the UIB's doctoral programmes, and led by researchers recognised for their research expertise. The focus will be on recruiting young PhDs, externally recruited established researchers, visiting researchers of recognised prestige and on promoting projects with a strong experimental component, as well as fostering exchanges with national and European universities.
Area of scientific infrastructure. The UIB laboratories and institutes will be provided with the scientific and technical infrastructure necessary to develop projects with an experimental approach. Furthermore, laboratory equipment will be acquired and the tools necessary for the development of projects in experimental laboratories replaced.
Scope of project funding. Competitive research projects in various fields of knowledge will be promoted, and resources will be provided for competitive research projects that have opened up new lines of strategic interest for the UIB not initially contemplated.
All this will have an impact on the improvement of social and economic conditions, and the technological development of society. Likewise, the results of the scientific activity will be made known in forums of high scientific and technological impact, will boost the internationalisation of research activities at the UIB and put the Balearic Islands on the international research map.
Promoting scientific and technological research to diversify the Balearic economy and improve social and environmental welfare.
