The conservation of natural heritage, environmental protection and the promotion of agricultural activity in the Balearic Islands is fundamental in order to achieve sustainable development in the Balearic Islands, and a
healthy, balanced economy that is viable in the long term. The protection of agricultural activity is particularly important in the archipelago, as it is one of the more vulnerable sectors in island settings.
Thus, the project aimed at maintaining the traditional agricultural landscape will be rolled out through two actions:
The first of these will be to provide a system of support to encourage crop diversification and recognise the positive impact that farmers have on rural areas. This will involve owners of agricultural land contributing to the sustainability of the agricultural landscape through multi-cropping and the conservation of woodland areas, the development of agricultural practices that promote soil fertility and prevent soil erosion, protect plant cover and market local produce through quality brands.
The second will be to promote the restructuring of traditional fruit tree crops in the Balearic Islands with a specific package of subsidies. Currently, these crops are heavily affected by drought, climate change and pests, reducing their productive potential.
This project will be implemented by the regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food through the FOGAIBA (Balearic Islands Agricultural and Fisheries Guarantee Fund). It is expected to benefit 1,200 farms and 40,000 young fruit trees will be planted.
Project aimed at improving the competitiveness of the primary sector in the Balearic Islands to promote its economic viability in a context of climate change.
