Tourism has been a fundamental element of the Balearic Island economy for decades. But maintaining this leading position in a highly competitive tourism market requires a highly qualified workforce adapted to today's challenges, such as sustainability and innovation. Business associations and trade unions have stressed the importance of implementing measures to improve the skills of professionals and strengthen job quality.
In this context, the Strategic Plan for Professional Excellence in the Tourism Sector is essential to identify the training challenges of the sector and to design an action plan aimed at improving the skills of workers. The project also includes a series of communication campaigns to improve the social perception of tourism as in recent years young people have lost interest in pursuing a career in this field.
The project consists of two main actions: a Strategic Plan for Professional Excellence and the development of communication campaigns to promote tourism and its professional opportunities.
The first consists of the creation of a plan defining the actions necessary to improve the education and training of people working in the tourism sector. The plan will be developed with the collaboration of all agents involved (public bodies, academia, business and trade unions) in order to generate synergies and optimise resources. The strategic plan will be completed by the end of 2025, and actions will be monitored during 2026 and 2027.
With regard to the communication campaigns, the aim is to improve the perception of tourism among society and to promote it as an attractive career option for young people. The goal is to communicate the importance of tourism as an engine of sustainable development in the Balearic Islands, as well as to highlight the wide range of job opportunities offered by the sector.
These campaigns will target different segments of the population, with messages that highlight the benefits of tourism for Balearic society and the diversity of professional fields it encompasses. The intention is to foster interest in the sector among young people and to increase the number of qualified workers who choose to pursue a career in tourism.
In this way, the development of the strategic plan will contribute to improving the training quality for workers in the tourism sector, which will result in a higher quality service for visitors and an increase in the competitiveness of the Balearic Islands as a tourist destination.
Communication campaigns will help to reverse the negative perception of tourism and attract new professionals to the sector, thus ensuring long-term continuity and excellence of the tourism service. It will also contribute to strengthening the role of tourism as a driving force for economic, social and environmental development in the Balearic Islands.
