Improving accessibility to the Balearic Island coastal lagoons and their bird observatories

Action to be taken in areas of environmental relevance so as to guarantee safe and quality public usage

What does it consist of?

In this project, action will principally be taken in the s'Albufera de Mallorca Natural Park, the s'Albufera d'Es Grau Natural Park (Menorca) and the Ses Salines d'Eivissa i Formentera Natural Park. The aim is to solve some issues affecting the movement of people and bicycles and the local bird life, by improving accessibility and the existing bird observatories.

The project

The s'Albufera de Mallorca Natural Park, the s'Albufera d'Es Grau Natural Park (Menorca) and the Ses Salines d'Eivissa i Formentera Natural Park are three places of environmental relevance which receive a large number of visitors from different countries.

Due to the general increase in the amount of visitors, it is necessary to have better routes and facilities to ensure that public usage of these places is safe and of high quality, as well as being in line with the conservation objectives of each park.

In this sense and for this project, a series of actions to be taken have been outlined to combat the deficiencies or shortages of each natural space:

In the s'Albufera de Mallorca Natural Park, the proposal is to carry out work on the four main routes which are currently in bad condition and have drainage problems. Action will also focus on the access pathway to the information centre and the park buildings, where the road surface is in a bad state. Finally, restauration work will be carried out on a pier that has been damaged due to rising water levels.

As for the s'Albufera d'Es Grau Natural Park in Menorca, work is to be carried out on three routes: the blue route (Sa Gola), the green route (Santa Matrona) and the red route (Cala Llimpa). On these routes, the idea is to carry out general maintenance work, correct eroded sections and improve viewpoints.

Finally, work will be carried out in the Ses Salines d'Eivissa i Formentera Natural Park which focuses on the route that connects the Can Marroig ponds to the interpretation centre, so as to enable the observation of aquatic birds and the landscape of the coastal lagoon through the installation of a raised platform. It will also include the installation of notice boards explaining which birds can be seen.
