The project

The island of Menorca was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1993 and is committed to the global alliance for climate change mitigation. For this reason, it strives to become a more sustainable island that respects its natural environment, making more efficient use of its available resources, which are both sensitive and limited. One of these key resources is water.

The aim of this project is to provide a solution to the current challenges faced by the island regarding its water infrastructure. To this end, it will promote improvements across the eight municipalities that make up Menorca, with the goal of enhancing quality of life, environmental sustainability, and fire safety.

These actions will lead to improvements in the drinking water and sanitation networks, which in some cases have become outdated or do not reach all population centres. This will optimise the management and sustainability of the water cycle by reducing both water losses and infrastructure breakdowns.

The project also includes the installation and connection of photovoltaic panels to reduce energy consumption in these facilities. Additionally, the project will strengthen fire prevention systems by improving the availability of hydrants and creating a system to collect and better utilise rainwater.

All these measures will also help prevent the overexploitation of aquifers, which negatively affects the quality of the drinking water supplied to the population of Menorca.
