This project aims to make it easier for farms to continue their activities in an area as vulnerable as the Serra de Tramuntana, on the island of Mallorca. The aim here is to prevent the abandonment of agricultural activity and to preserve the traditional mountain landscape of the Balearic Islands.

The Serra de Tramuntana was declared a World Heritage Site in 2011. It occupies almost 30% of the total surface area of Mallorca, and is home to traditional agricultural activities that have survived until the present day. However, difficulty of access and the high cost of agricultural production in mountain areas has led to the gradual abandonment of farms, and consequently to the degradation of the land.
In ecosystems as fragile as that of the Serra de Tramuntana, the maintenance of sustainable agricultural activity is particularly important in terms of protecting biodiversity and promoting ecological balance. The aim of this project is to counterbalance the natural difficulties and cover the additional costs that farmers have to bear in order to continue their activities.
The project will establish a line of compensatory payments for landowners whose main source of income is agricultural activity. This will facilitate the continuity of agricultural activities in this area, activities that are particularly vulnerable to climate change, strengthening the role of the agricultural sector, which forms part of the social and natural wealth of the Balearic islands, in the conservation of their traditional landscape.
The funds will be disbursed through the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food via the FOGAIBA (Balearic Islands Agricultural and Fisheries Guarantee Fund), within the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) strategic plan.
