The Ses Meravelles square was built in the 1980s on the Arenal de Palma dune system. Today, however, it's not particularly attractive for residents and tourists visiting the area: the space is outdated and doesn’t reflect the environmental richness of the place where it was built.
To add to that, the physical barriers of the square, with raised areas and stone walls, make it inaccessible to people with reduced mobility. This restricts access for a significant portion of the population. Due to this urgent renovation of the square is needed in order to restore its value and transform it into a more welcoming, accessible and attractive space.
The actions to be carried out include the creation of a children's play area and water. These will replace the existing ornamental fountain with safe, flat water jets, which will provide a refreshing alternative during the warmer months and work as an ornamental fountain in the colder months.
Accessibility will be improved too: the perimeter walls will be lowered and new pedestrian routes will be created with slopes of less than 5%, so that the square complies with accessibility regulations. The connection between the square and the adjacent streets, such as Calle Marbella and the beach, will also be improved, creating a more accessible and seamlessly integrated space with its surroundings.
The square's green area will also be completely transformed to create a more pleasant and natural space. A wide variety of trees and shrubs will be planted, along with spices to create a natural tapestry, and aromatic plants to add colour, shade, and a refreshing, relaxing ambiance. A winding path will allow visitors to walk through the green area in comfort and enjoy nature. Moreover, the existing trees will be maintained, although some will be moved to the new rest area.
Finally, a pergola will be installed, providing a visual and functional separation between areas for children of different ages. A picnic area with accessible and safe tables for people with different physical abilities will also be set up. In addition, an outdoor exercise area will be enclosed with exercise equipment, surrounded by gardens that will provide shade through strategic tree planting.
