Selva Launches the Restoration of the Old Quarry in Biniamar

A project on the Balearic Islands to recover a deteriorated space and provide new municipal services in an old quarry

What does it consist of?

The old Es Campassos quarry, located next to the town of Biniamar, is set for a new start. Selva Town Council is drafting a plan that will allow for its ecological restoration and subsequent reuse for community services, after years of being left derelict and progressively deteriorating.

The project

Since it ceased mining activity in 2003, the Es Campassos quarry has remained in disuse, with an unfinished restoration project that was abandoned in 2007. This damaged area of more than eight hectares is partly within the Serra de Tramuntana Natural Park and areas protected by the Natura 2000 network.

Selva Town Council's project foresees action over two separate phases. With regard to the forest area, environmental restoration is proposed that favours native revegetation, with paths and spaces for public use that aligns with conservation. In the area closest to the town centre, reuse is planned for key services: solar-powered car parks, social housing, educational and sports facilities.

The first step, already underway, consists of the technical drafting of the restoration and reuse plan, including preliminary mining safety and environmental reports. This preparatory work, estimated at €100,000, is essential to clarifying the legal and physical conditions of the environment before undertaking the next phases of the project.

Meanwhile, geotechnical and environmental impact studies will be carried out, and the execution projects will be drafted. This work will not just recover a derelict space, but will also respond to local demands regarding infrastructure and services, improving cohesion between the natural landscape and development in the municipality.
