Plaça del Mercat square in Palma and its surroundings will undergo urban planning work that will tackle both accessibility and the renovation of sewage networks. This work, planned with support from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) fund, responds to EU environmental obligations and a backlog of technical issues.

The work in Plaça del Mercat square and the street of Carrer Unió in Palma is part of a set of projects funded by the ITS fund, a tool that allows part of the visitor levy to go towards improvements that benefit both locals and visitors. In this case, the aim is to reinforce basic infrastructure and improve the functionality of a central public space.
The project includes remodelled pavements, greater pedestrian accessibility and, above all, the separation of rainwater and wastewater networks. Currently, the two converge in an old sewer in Carrer Unió, which causes management problems during heavy rainfall. The reform will also comply with EU directives on city water treatment.
Beyond the installation of a new rainwater network, old sections of the drinking water network will be renewed and household connections will be adapted. It is also planned to properly channel wastewater into main pipes, following EMAYA's technical standards. All this shall be achieved without altering the historical identity of the area.
Although work has not yet started, the planned timetable foresees the start of the works at the beginning of 2026. This type of work is key to making the demands of urban sustainability compatible with daily life in cities such as Palma, which must survive under heavy pressure from tourism.
