The network of protected natural spaces on the Balearic Islands plays an essential role in the conservation of environmental heritage and in offering activities linked to nature tourism. Current management goals include the need to ensure responsible and orderly public use, which increases knowledge of the environment without compromising its ecological balance.
To this end, a wide-ranging scheme has been launched to update and improve public facilities in 13 protected areas. The project ranges from the reforming interpretation centres to installing new bird hides, educational boards and interactive tools such as touch screens and multilingual mobile apps.
A major part of the work focuses on strengthening accessibility. For example, an accessible route will be designed on the public Cúber estate, in the Tramuntana mountains, and the Can Marroig building in Ses Salines will be refurbished to allow access for people with reduced mobility. Video and exhibition content will also be updated in spaces such as s'Albufera des Grau and the Museu de Cabrera.
The project also plans for the implementation of the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in several of these sites. This framework of commitment involves managers, local businesses and visitors in building a tourism model in line with the values of conservation and local development.
