The project
The Directorate-General of Agriculture and Livestock, through the Rural Development Department has implemented a number of actions in the area of irrigation with reclaimed water, consisting of the modernisation of existing irrigation systems and the expansion of new irrigation networks.
The use of reclaimed water for irrigation has a significant impact on the environment and the landscape due to how it helps in the recovery of the aquifers, offsets the effects of long periods of drought, guarantees the supply of water during the summer and provides quality water to farmers. It also helps maintain the agricultural landscape, making more efficient use of water and preventing uncontrolled discharge into the sea.
This project involves the municipality of Porreres, following the same guidelines as all the irrigation work with treated water. In this regard, the project, the aim of which is to take advantage of water from the WWTP, has three major plans: a pool for storage of purified water from the WWTP, water treatment and irrigation networks. All of these activities as a whole will directly benefit the irrigator community of Porreres, consisting of more than 100 users, covering a crop area of approximately 150 hectares.
