The project

Sport and physical activity have become key tools for moving towards a less seasonal tourism model. With this premise, Menorca Island Council is promoting the project Menorca Esportiva - Desestacionalització (Sporty Menorca - Reducing Seasonality), a strategy that combines investment in sports facilities with the promotion of sport as a tourist product.

The initiative, financed with funds from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS), includes actions in all the municipalities of the island: from a new athletics track in Ciutadella to heated swimming pools in Maó, Alaior and Sant Lluís, as well as renovations in sports centres and football pitches in Es Mercadal, Ferreries and Es Migjorn Gran. Also included are improvements to the arena Pavelló Menorca and more energy-efficient equipment.

The project will be implemented in phases over the coming years, with a first block of actions already underway or at an advanced stage of drafting, and a second block that will be carried out according to budget availability. In total, over 21 million euros are expected to be mobilised, with investment spread out between 2025 and 2026.

In addition to the direct impact on the local sports sector, the initiative aims to act as a driver for active tourism, strengthening Menorca's role as a sustainable, healthy destination. The project is part of the Island Sports Facilities Plan and embraces a territorial vision that brings together health, sport, landscape and local economy.
