The project

The relationship between Formentera and the sea is as historical as it is essential. This connection has been enshrined in the construction of a new water sports centre in La Savina, in order to provide a sustainable response to the growing demand for activities linked to the ocean environment. In an area of great ecological importance, Estany des Peix, the island has been provided with functional, accessible and adapted facilities.

The new infrastructure also responds to an organisational need. The relocation of the Municipal Sailing School and the concentration of services mean different water sports disciplines can be offered in a single location. These include sailing, rowing and scuba diving under controlled conditions in a learning environment. This is a commitment to orderly access to the sea and a quality water sports experience for residents and tourists alike.

In terms of tourism, the project seeks to encourage more balance throughout the year. On an island where pressure from summer tourism is high, having resources that attract tourists in the low season is key to diversifying the local economy. Thus, the centre not only offers a place to practice sport, but also reinforces the Island Council’s strategy to reduce tourism seasonality.

Funded entirely by sustainable tourism tax, the project was completed in 2023 with full budget execution. The facilities are already open and running. They prove that public investment can serve responsible recreation, environmental protection and balanced land development all at once.
