Ibiza Town Council will work on the sewage system in Talamanca and the port to seal saltwater intrusions. These intrusions increase the conductivity of wastewater, hinder its purification and reduce its potential for reuse. The plan, with a budget of €1.9 million, is set to be carried out in 2025.

The sewage system in some coastal areas of Ibiza has an ongoing problem: seawater is leaking through cracks and weak points. This situation, particularly in Talamanca and at the city port, hinders effective treatment and the possibility of reusing treated water, as it becomes highly conductive.
The plan will involve technical works on several fronts. First, leaks will be located using robot inspection cameras, mobile sampling stations and measurement campaigns. Corrective measures will then be taken, such as replacing sections of damaged piping, installing internal pipe sleeves and waterproofing shafts using resin.
The ultimate goal is to reduce the volume and improve the quality of the water reaching the treatment plant. This means it can then be used for agricultural or irrigation purposes. It will also reduce the amount of energy used by the pumping system and ease pressure on the island’s water cycle.
Works are expected to take five months, being completed in 2025. The budget amounts to €1.94 million and is part of the island’s strategy to improve water and sustainability-related infrastructure. Future maintenance will be carried out by the municipal water service.
