Tourist positioning of Balearic Islands cultural heritage.

Promotion of Balearic Island cultural heritage as an engine of sustainable tourism and a tool for deseasonalisation.

What does it consist of?

This project encompasses two major initiatives: the creation of The Balearic Islands: Phoenicians, Punics and Talayotics cultural route and the Ramon Llull International Congress. The project

According to the 2015 World Charter for Sustainable Tourism and the objectives of the World Tourism Organisation, cultural tourism must be responsible, sustainable and contribute to the preservation of the cultural identity of destinations and promote cultural exchanges. In this context, there is a need to integrate the cultural heritage of the Balearic Islands into the tourist offer, not only to attract visitors, but also to consolidate the tourism sector as a tool for the social and economic development of our archipelago.

Recognition of our cultural heritage through tourism is thus rolled out in two main initiatives that contribute to the dissemination and recognition of cultural heritage:

The Balearic Islands: Phoenicians, Punics and Talayotics cultural route

This itinerary aims to highlight the Phoenician, Punic and Talayotic archaeological heritage of the Balearic Islands. Phoenicians were present in Eivissa from the 7th century BC and contact with the Talayotic cultures of Mallorca and Menorca left a significant mark on the history of our islands. The project aims to create a Smart Way within the Cultural Routes, created by the Council of Europe to connect the cultural heritage of different countries and cultures. The route will take advantage of the connections between these archaeological sites, highlighting areas declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Creating this route seeks to improve the positioning of the Balearic Islands as a cultural tourist destination, to convey the impact of commercial and cultural relations with the Phoenician-Punic world, and to recognise the cultural and landscape heritage by collaboration between institutions and entities. Sustainable and low season tourism is also promoted, in line with the objectives of the Extraordinary Annual Plan for the Promotion of Sustainable Tourism 2023.

Ramon Llull International Congress

Born in Mallorca, the figure of Ramon Llull is fundamental for understanding medieval and modern thought. The International Ramon Llull Congress seeks to maintain the international projection of his figure and to reinforce the leadership of the Balearic Islands in research into his work. With debates and conferences, more than 50 world-renowned researchers will come together to explore his influence on philosophical and religious thought. This congress also has a tourism objective as the promotion of large-scale cultural events is an attraction for MICE tourism (congress and event tourism).

These initiatives will not only improve knowledge of our history, identity and culture, but will also reinforce the positioning of the Balearic Islands as a cultural destination. This will attract new tourist segments, contribute to the deseasonalisation of the tourism offer and generate major benefits for local communities.
