Access to decent housing is fundamental to quality of life and social inclusion. In the Balearic Islands, the promotion of public housing managed by the Balearic Housing Institute (IBAVI) and supported by funding from sustainable tourism tax (ITS) makes it possible to offer stable housing solutions to people and families who cannot afford free market prices, especially at this time of great pressure on the property market.
The subsidised public housing promoted by the IBAVI aims to guarantee the right to housing and prevent situations of social exclusion. Thanks to ITS funding, properties are developed and managed for social renting, with prices in accordance with the financial resources of the successful bidders. These actions not only respond to a basic need, but also serve to create stable residential environments, helping people to set down roots in the municipalities and reinforcing social cohesion, especially among vulnerable groups and the elderly.
In this video of the Vides Transformades series, we meet Jose and Maria, two seniors who were at risk of social exclusion due to the high cost of the rent they had to pay. Access to public housing has meant a radical change in their lives: stability, peace of mind and the chance to live with dignity. Through their story, the video shows how these public policies, managed by IBAVI, not only provide a home, but also restore security and well-being to people who today are deeply grateful for an opportunity to feel at home again.
